Controversial Bill Sparks Heated Debate over Autonomous Vehicle Deployment in D.C.

In a heated session at the District of Columbia council today, labor unions voiced strong opposition to a legislative bill that could pave the way for autonomous robotaxis to navigate the streets of Washington, D.C. Teamsters, alongside other labor groups, raised significant concerns about the proposed Autonomous Vehicle (AV) Deployment Authorization Amendment Act, or Bill 26-0684, which they claim benefits tech giants at the expense of workers.

The legislation, if passed, would permit companies such as Waymo to operate driverless vehicles within the city. However, labor leaders are calling for the council to dismiss the bill, citing inadequate worker protections. Bill Davis, President of Teamsters Local 639, described the bill as "another example of Big Tech companies trying to steamroll cities into changing laws to accommodate them, and it comes at the expense of middle-class professional drivers and anyone else who wants safer streets in our city.”

Despite the tech allure, autonomous vehicles remain unpopular with voters. Attempts to legalize such technology have collapsed in states like Illinois, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, and even nearby Maryland and Virginia.

The personal impact of this potential change is not lost on those it threatens most. Demani Petron-King, a Local 639 member, expressed the peril faced by many workers: “Driverless cars would be a disaster for someone like me. This job is how I provide for my family, pay my bills, and have amazing health care. We can’t call driverless vehicles progress when they will hurt so many communities. The well-being of people like me should not be the price our society pays for innovation.”

Teamsters Local 639, a longstanding advocate for workers across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia since 1934, continues to campaign against changes they believe would undermine economic stability for countless families.
