UWUA Launches Mental Health Support Hotline for Members
Commencing on Sunday, June 28, a new mental health resource will be available for members of the Utility Workers Union of America (UWUA). This initiative, known as the UWUAid hotline, is designed to offer immediate member-to-member support for individuals in need of mental health assistance.
Accessible to all UWUA members experiencing a crisis, the hotline can be reached at the following numbers based on region:
- Regions 1, 2 & 3: (202) 988-9800
- Regions 4 & 5: (213) 866-9902
Operating around the clock every day of the year, the hotline ensures complete privacy for its callers, being fully compliant with HIPAA regulations. This initiative is spearheaded by the Veterans Committee as a vital step in supporting utility workers, addressing both job-related and personal issues, including unique challenges faced by veterans within the union.
In the United States, suicide ranks as a leading cause of death, with men and veterans particularly at risk. Research indicates that proactive offers of help significantly increase the effectiveness of suicide prevention efforts, highlighting the importance of this accessible support system.
A special thank you extends to the UWUA members nationwide who have volunteered to manage the hotline. These dedicated individuals underwent an intensive 14-hour training program focusing on recognizing suicide crisis warning signs and learning methods to effectively question, persuade, and refer individuals in need to appropriate help.
By investing in this mental health resource, the UWUA acknowledges the growing public health crisis surrounding mental health, striving to enhance services for its members as we approach 2026. Members are encouraged to widely share the hotline numbers and add them to their contacts for easy access. Members can also download, post, and distribute the flyer.
