AFSCME Fights to Keep Pappas Hospital Open for Medically Complex Kids
Community Rallies to Preserve Essential Children's Hospital in Massachusetts
In Canton, Massachusetts, Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children stands as a singular institution dedicated to providing specialized care for medically complex children. With no comparable facility in the state, Pappas offers essential rehabilitation, education, therapy, and long-term care, becoming an indispensable resource for many families.
Denise Mackinnon, vice president of AFSCME Local 1517 (Council 93), emphasized the hospital's unique role, stating, "We are their safety net. These kids have no alternative. We are there for them. We become part of their family. We watch them grow up, we celebrate their milestones, and we carry them in our hearts. Every one of them deserves a full life. We're here to make sure they get that chance."
Parents frequently express gratitude to the hospital staff, highlighting the impact Pappas has on their lives. "They want us to know what it means to them, that their child was seen, that someone cared," Mackinnon shared. "And right now, families are scared. If Pappas closes, they don't know where their children will go or who will care for them the way we do."
The potential closure of Pappas by Gov. Maura Healey’s administration mobilized AFSCME members and affected families to action. A robust campaign involving State House protests, testimonies, phone calls, and a petition with over 17,000 signatures resulted in a temporary reprieve.
While the closure has been paused and temporary funding secured, concerns remain. Mackinnon noted, "We got a pause, but the threat is not over. They're continuing on the same path." The restrictive admission criteria and redefined standards for "hospital level of care" have led to some patients being turned away, limiting access to the hospital's vital services.
The Ongoing Battle for Pappas' Future
The community effort must persist to ensure Pappas remains open and accessible for those who need it. "If we ultimately keep this facility open for the children of Massachusetts," Mackinnon asserted, "it will be because the people who care for these kids every day refused to stay silent. We know what's at stake. We know what these children need. And we were willing to fight for them.”
The situation at Pappas highlights the broader issue of healthcare access for vulnerable populations. The hospital's supporters urge continued advocacy to safeguard its future, ensuring children who depend on its services have the security they deserve. AFSCME members and families encourage the public to contact elected officials to emphasize the importance of protecting Pappas.
