Panama-Buena Vista School District Workers Secure New Contract with Enhanced Benefits

In a significant development for school district employees, Teamsters Local 87 has successfully negotiated a new contract for 243 workers at the Panama-Buena Vista Union School District in Bakersfield, California. This contract was ratified with a strong majority, marking a substantial victory for the workforce of the district's 25 K-8 schools.

"This strong agreement is vital for me, my colleagues, and our students across the district," said Joseph Diaz, a maintenance department worker and chief shop steward. He emphasized the importance of unity during negotiations to secure fair compensation and benefits. "Improved wages and health care benefits mean our departments can remain fully staffed to make sure students have access to a good public education."

The new terms include a $1,000 bonus for full-time employees with equivalent payments for part-time staff. Health care provisions have also been improved, featuring a no-cost employee premium in the base plan. Employees under this agreement work in various roles spanning multiple departments within the district.
