UAW Local 2093 Prepares for Strike as Fair Deal Deadline Approaches

Union members at UAW Local 2093 are preparing for a potential strike at American Axle in Three Rivers, Michigan, if an agreeable contract is not reached by their May 31 deadline. Almost 1,000 employees at this significant General Motors supplier are poised to walk out, following a nearly unanimous vote in favor of strike action earlier in May. The company has been accused of using threats and intimidation tactics against the workers as they press for a fair contract.

The United Auto Workers (UAW) has lodged multiple Unfair Labor Practice complaints against American Axle, alleging illegal actions by the company. As the midnight deadline approaches, UAW Local 2093 has planned a Livestream event to update members on the status of negotiations.

Event Details

Back in 2008, during the economic downturn, employees at American Axle accepted significant pay cuts to keep the plant operational. Wages that were once as high as $29 per hour were reduced to $14.50. Now, eighteen years later, earnings have only risen to a maximum of $22 per hour after a five-year period, which remains significantly lower when adjusted for inflation compared to pre-2008 levels.

Throughout the last ten years, as a vital component supplier to General Motors, American Axle has reported $8.4 billion in profits. Despite this financial success, CEO compensation has reached $111 million, with the company's top five executives collectively taking nearly $231 million. Meanwhile, UAW members at the Three Rivers facility face financial hardships, with some resorting to living in their vehicles due to insufficient wages.
