Michigan Science Center Workers Vote to Join UAW, Citing Workplace Issues
Michigan Science Center Staff Vote to Unionize
In a recent election overseen by the National Labor Relations Board, employees from the Michigan Science Center (MI-SCI) have decided to join the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, with a significant majority voting in favor of the move. The group comprises individuals working in guest relations and education roles.
The decision to seek union representation emerged from concerns among staff regarding persistent management bullying, harassment, and scheduling conflicts. Additionally, employees expressed frustration over the implementation of new policies and programs, instituted by management without adequate consultation with the staff members who engage directly with visitors and uphold the Science Center's public image.
UAW Region 1 Director, LaShawn English, commented on the development, stating, “The victory at MI-SCI proves that when workers stand together, workers win.” English emphasized that the staff sought representation to ensure their opinions were considered, their efforts respected, and to secure a meaningful role in decision-making processes. “Their courage and unity made this moment possible. Every worker deserves dignity, respect, and the opportunity to help shape their workplace. UAW Region 1 proudly stands with the workers at MI-SCI as they begin this new chapter. They believed in each other, stayed united, and they won.”
