Governor Whitmer Announces Investments in Michigan's Upper Peninsula

Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) revealed business investment and community revitalization projects in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. These initiatives will represent over $5.5 million in capital investment, protecting 85 high-paying jobs in the region.

“These projects will drive more than $5.5 million of investment and safeguard 85 good-paying jobs in Houghton and Schoolcraft counties," stated Governor Whitmer. "From reducing operating costs at a lumber plant to more housing in downtown Manistique, we are advancing our economic development strategy to win projects, support companies, and build affordable housing. Let's keep proving that Michigan is the best place to live, work, and invest.”

MEDC Senior Vice President Matt McCauley emphasized, “Today’s announcement enhances Team Michigan's commitment by supporting business development, job retention, and community revitalization efforts in the U.P.”

Northern Hardwoods Lumber's Eco-Friendly Upgrade

Northern Hardwoods Lumber plans to install a new biomass boiler and steam turbine at their Atlantic Mine facility in Houghton County. This upgrade will reduce operating costs and emissions, adding longevity to the company's operations and retaining 85 jobs. Without this investment, the company risked closure at the end of the current boiler's lifecycle.

The company anticipates $4.75 million in capital investment, aided by a $250,000 Michigan Business Development Program grant and a $1 million USDA Wood Innovations Grant. The 85 jobs protected by this investment average $23.76 per hour plus benefits, exceeding regional wages by $4.50 per hour.

Jeff Ratcliffe of the Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance noted, "Northern Hardwoods continues to offer good-paying jobs by processing valuable timber from the U.P.'s hardwood forests. We appreciate MEDC's support for Northern Hardwoods’ capacity and efficiency improvements." For more information on careers, click here.

Cedar Street Real Estate's Revitalization in Manistique

Cedar Street Real Estate is revitalizing a former bank in downtown Manistique, transforming it into a mixed-use property. Supported by a $250,000 Build MI Community Grant, the redevelopment includes 4,670 sq. ft. of office space converted into three residential apartments with an investment of nearly $820,000. This project aims to enhance downtown density and provide much-needed housing.

Developers Kristina Behrens and Antonio Adan expressed, “Our investment in downtown Manistique brings needed housing along the commercial corridor. The mixed-use development will create a more pedestrian-friendly area.”

The project, prioritized by the City of Manistique, has received local support through an OPRA tax abatement valued at $81,577. Invest UP provided collateral support from the Build UP program.

Victoria George of Schoolcraft Tourism & Commerce commented, “Kristina’s renovation of the Manistique Bank building is a great example of small developers making a big impact. By adding three new apartments, she addresses housing shortages, offering vital options for residents."
