Teamsters Local 315 members joined political leaders at a rally today, demonstrating against Brenntag Pacific’s lockout of its workers, a move placing the community at a significant safety risk. This industrial action marks the fourth day of the lockout at the Brenntag Pacific chemical plant, a prominent global chemical distributor boasting profits exceeding $4.3 billion in 2023.

Brenntag initiated the lockout of 18 Teamsters drivers and warehouse workers on Tuesday, contradicting their contractual agreement with workers. The workers, represented by Local 315, have been in negotiations with Brenntag since their previous contract ended on January 31.

Rene Martínez, a Brenntag Pacific driver, emphasized the lack of training provided to new drivers handling dangerous chemicals, such as sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide, and the resulting potential risk to the community. Brenntag, however, has not promised that the replacement workers will receive equivalent training.

The unanimous rejection of Brenntag's recent contract proposal led to this lockout. The proposal involved no retroactive pay since January 31 and a pension contributions freeze. It also included health care premiums nearly three times the current rate. Given the high risk of injuries like chemical burns at the workplace, the Teamsters resolutely turned down the proposal.

Long-standing Brenntag warehouse worker, Miguel Delgado, criticized the continuous sacrifice workers are compelled to make, rendering their jobs unsustainable due to rising medical costs. Brenntag sidestepped negotiations and violated the no-lockout clause, endangering numerous plant employees.

Don E. Garcia, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 315, urged Brenntag to end the lockout and resume negotiations in good faith. He highlighted the invaluable contributions of experienced workers in maintaining safety within the community and the workplace.

Founded in 1936, Teamsters Local 315 represents over 4,600 workers across Contra, Costa, Napa, and Solano counties in California.
