AFL-CIO Applauds OSHA's Proposed Extreme Heat Safety Rule
AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler issued a statement regarding a new OSHA standard aimed at protecting workers from extreme heat dangers:
“With record-high temperatures becoming the norm, the Biden administration's proposed rule is essential. Both indoor and outdoor workers, especially workers of color and immigrants, face significant risks of heat-related illnesses and injuries. If implemented, this new rule will address critical needs for workers' health and safety: water, shade, rest breaks, training, and acclimatization for hot environments.
“The AFL-CIO has advocated for these preventive measures to be established in federal law. We commend President Biden and Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su for addressing the threat of extreme heat with this action. We urge OSHA to collaborate with unions to strengthen and finalize the rule swiftly, ensuring workers return home safely at the end of each shift.”
