Significant Wins for Albertsons Drivers in New Contract

In a notable development for labor rights, over 90 Albertsons drivers in Dallas have secured a favorable four-year contract, offering enhanced wages and benefits. The agreement, ratified by members of Teamsters Local 745, also includes pension plans and provisions against the rise of autonomous trucks.

Michael Perez, a Business Agent at Local 745, stated, “Our members sent a clear message to Albertsons that they were ready to walk if we didn’t get a fair deal.” The drivers had been poised to strike, a move that garnered attention nationwide and rallied support from thousands of Teamsters across the U.S.

The successful negotiations reflect a broader resistance to job automation in the trucking industry. Albertsons initially proposed moving towards the use of driverless trucks, particularly in Texas. However, Local 745 resisted, ensuring that any autonomous truck operated by the company must include a Teamsters-trained operator, thereby safeguarding jobs.

Clyde Jackson, an Albertsons driver and Local 745 shop steward, highlighted the importance of the contract, noting, “This agreement gives us the security we need to support our families, retire with dignity, and protect our jobs from automation.”

Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division, praised the outcome as a major victory for union members, emphasizing their commitment to protecting union jobs and securing the contracts that members deserve.
