Volkswagen Chattanooga Workers to Vote in Union Election, Apr 17-19 - UAW

TL/DR -

Over 4,000 Volkswagen workers are set to vote in their union election on April 17, 18 and 19. The election was filed for last week after a supermajority of the workers signed union cards and it represents the latest breakthrough in the nationwide movement of non-union autoworkers organising to join the UAW. Over 10,000 non-union autoworkers have signed union cards in recent months, with public campaigns launched at VW, Mercedes, Hyundai, and Toyota.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. Union Vote Set for April

Over 4,000 Volkswagen workers are poised to vote in their union election on April 17, 18 and 19, overseen by the National Labor Relations Board at the VW plant in Chattanooga.

"Our vote is for a better life for ourselves and our families," says Isaac Meadows, a Volkswagen assembly worker. "We need a say in schedules, benefits, pay, and more. Working at Volkswagen is a source of pride, but having a voice at work is of equal importance."

The Volkswagen workers filed for the election after a supermajority signed union cards. They achieved a majority on cards in early February, two months post their public campaign launch to join the UAW.

The Volkswagen union election signifies a significant landmark in the national movement of non-union autoworkers striving to join the UAW. UAW members' record contracts from last year's Stand Up Strike against the Big Three auto companies have spurred this movement.

In recent months, over 10,000 non-union autoworkers have signed union cards, launching public campaigns at VW, Mercedes in Vance, Ala., Hyundai in Montgomery, Ala., and Toyota in Troy, Mo. Active organizing is underway at more than two dozen other facilities. For more information, visit uaw.org/join
