Federal Judge Rules for Union as Amazon Teamsters Campaign Grows Stronger
(ERLANGER, Ky.) – The International Brotherhood of Teamsters scored a key victory in the union’s national fight to organize Amazon workers after a federal judge ruled the Teamsters can picket the Amazon Air Hub at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport without interference.
The air cargo hub, known as KCVG, shares property with DHL, home to thousands of ramp and tug workers actively organizing with the Teamsters.
The US District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky stated the Kenton County Airport Board could not restrict workers’ free speech rights. The board had previously blocked Teamsters’ demonstrations, leading to the union’s request for an injunction.
“This is a significant victory for Amazon workers in Northern Kentucky and nationwide. Amazon employees are uniting to become Teamsters for the rights and protections they deserve,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. “This precedent will be carried to other communities where Amazon exploits workers. Our 1.3 million members applaud the court's decision.”
Teamsters Local 89 in Louisville has been organizing pickets and rallies around KCVG this summer. A permit for a demonstration was denied in July, but the District Court’s ruling now allows picketing on sidewalks and public easements.
Over 100 Amazon drivers in Skokie, Illinois, went on strike recently due to unfair labor practices and are organizing with workers in New York and California. In June, 5,500 Amazon Labor Union members voted to affiliate with the Teamsters. ALU-IBT Local 1, newly chartered by the Teamsters, will represent workers at JFK8 in Staten Island, N.Y.
Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents 1.3 million workers in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. Visit Teamster.org for more information.
