Chicago Parking Workers on the Brink of Strike Amid Contract Negotiations
As the deadline for the Master Parking Agreement looms, approximately 1,200 Teamsters Local 727 members are casting their votes today to potentially initiate an unfair labor practice strike. This move is rooted in ongoing contract discussions that are yet to reach a resolution before the October 31 deadline. The agreement involves various parking operators, including SP Plus/Metropolis, LAZ Parking, and Interpark, among others.
John T. Coli Jr., Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 727, emphasized the critical role these workers play in maintaining the seamless operation of parking services across major venues in the Chicagoland area. "These employers have repeatedly violated federal labor law while dragging their feet at the bargaining table and we will not tolerate this behavior. Our members are prepared to take action to protect their rights and get the fair contract they deserve," Coli stated.
The Chicago Parking Association, representing these employers, engages in the collective bargaining process under the Master Parking Agreement. In response to alleged violations, Local 727 has filed or is preparing to file unfair labor practice charges, citing issues such as refusal to bargain, failure to provide necessary information, and unlawful surveillance, amongst others.
Carolyn German, a steward with Teamsters Local 727, highlighted the importance of their work to the city's daily operations. "People rely on us every day when they fly into Chicago, go to work, visit a hospital, or go to a Bears game," she said. "We take pride in that work, and we’re fighting for a contract that recognizes our contributions. These companies need to take our demands seriously, stop breaking the law, and negotiate a fair contract with us."
With representation for nearly 10,000 workers in the Chicago area, Teamsters Local 727 continues its push for fair labor practices. More details are available on their official site at teamsterslocal.727.org.
