Community-backed Organizing Drive Scores Success
Ascend Cannabis budtenders and shift leads have decided to become members of Teamsters Local 570, marking a first for Maryland. The decision garnered broad community support, with customers donning "vote yes" buttons in the dispensary.
“This is remarkable and groundbreaking. These workers' concerns, including better pay, assured minimum hours, fair scheduling, and a safer workplace, are crucial, and we plan to address them,” said Local 570 Secretary-Treasurer Sean Cedenio.
Adding to his remarks, Teamsters Western Region International Vice President and Food Processing Division Director Peter Finn said, “We've secured strong union contracts at Ascend dispensaries in other states. We're eager to replicate that success here."
Ascend worker and organizing committee member Ryan Bennett expressed the community's support, "Our struggle resonates with many, especially our loyal customers. This achievement is not only a win for us but for them as well."
