Stacy Smith: Rhode Island Public Worker and Never Quit Award Winner

Stacy Smith: A Beacon of Support for Rhode Island Residents

In the bustling offices of Rhode Island’s Department of Human Resources, Stacy Smith stands out not only as an eligibility technician but also as a dedicated problem solver. Her role involves helping individuals facing severe challenges such as opioid addiction, homelessness, and mental health issues, connecting them with essential state resources for a better future.

Smith, a proud public service worker and member of AFSCME Council 94, approaches her role with passion, drawing from her own life experiences. "I know what it’s like to walk through the door," she explains. "People don’t walk through our doors because they want to. People walk through because they have to. And we are going to fight the good fight for everyone."

Her exemplary service to the community has earned her the prestigious Never Quit Service Award, a testament to her extraordinary commitment to public service. This award celebrates workers who significantly enhance their communities by exceeding their duties.

Smith’s dedication extends beyond her professional life, influencing her family and the individuals she serves. She takes pride in inspiring her son to serve his country and finds joy in uplifting the spirits of those who seek her help. "The people that come into DHS are moms and dads," she notes. "They are grandparents. All walks of life, all races, all backgrounds. And when I get that mom that comes in, and I’m doing the interview, and maybe she’s doubting herself, I like to take those opportunities to remind her this is just a moment in time for her and she can change that at any time."

Every day for Smith is unpredictable yet fulfilling. "Every day is a new adventure," she says. "You never know who’s going to come through the door. You never know what the issue is that they may have. And until you do, you don’t know how to problem solve and work with them to overcome it."

Her work not only empowers the community but also sets a powerful example of resilience and service, making her a vital asset to the Department of Human Resources and a source of inspiration for many.
