Saunders: 'We must act to prevent another race against time'

TL/DR -

AFSCME President Lee Saunders expressed relief at the bipartisan deal to prevent a government shutdown. He criticized Congress for playing a "dangerous game" that could have led to major cuts to essential programs for working families. While the deal is only a short-term solution, he commended the "grown-up, responsible leadership" that prevented a government shutdown and stated there is more work to do to avoid a similar situation in the future.

AFSCME President Statement on Bipartisan Deal to Prevent Government Shutdown

AFSCME President Lee Saunders released a statement on the recent bipartisan deal, aimed at averting a potential government shutdown.

"We can breathe a sigh of relief – for now," Saunders stated. He criticized certain extremists in Congress for manufacturing an unnecessary crisis, that could have resulted in drastic cuts to critical programs that millions of working families rely on such as food, health care, child care, and housing.

In contrast, Saunders praised the bipartisan majorities for demonstrating responsible leadership and avoiding another government shutdown. "Federal employees, thousands of whom are represented by AFSCME, will continue serving the nation on Monday."

Despite this, Saunders cautioned that the Congressional Resolution approved and signed recently is merely a temporary measure. He argued that further work is necessary to avoid a similar situation right before the holiday season.
