AFSCME President Acknowledges International Museum Day

In honor of International Museum Day, AFSCME President Lee Saunders highlights the vital role of museum and cultural workers in preserving history, science, and art. Saunders emphasizes how these professionals inspire creativity and have spearheaded significant labor organizing changes in the past five years.

This year notably saw the formation of Colorado’s debut museum union at the Denver Art Museum, a significant step towards reducing staff turnover. The labor movement has expanded in major cities such as Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and New York. To date, cultural workers have secured an impressive 40 union elections, covering 4,400 workers across these cities. The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago recorded the latest victory in April.

Now forming part of AFSCME's Cultural Workers United, these dedicated professionals, totaling 40,000 members across over 25 states, leverage their union momentum to keep these cultural bastions accessible to all. Such efforts deserve recognition and celebration on International Museum Day.
