Ozomatli and Lulu Favela Boost Spirits at Kaiser Strike in Los Angeles
Kaiser Mental Health Workers Strike Gains Momentum with Musical Support and Media Attention
The second week of the Kaiser mental health workers' strike witnessed vibrant activities, including a musical performance by the band Ozomatli at the Los Angeles Medical Center. The ongoing strike continues to capture public interest as workers press for a fair contract.
In Panorama City, Isidra “Lulu” Favela, known for her viral TikTok video showing support for her therapist, Roxana, visited the striking workers. Lulu expressed feelings of warmth and community among the picketers, delivering a brief speech and engaging with media before attending the Dodgers' victory parade.
The strike's impact is evident with extensive media coverage. Three television stations reported on the picket line in Bakersfield. Additionally, a station in Tijuana and a podcast from Germany have highlighted the workers' efforts. Chris Reeves, a Psych RN, and Lisa Carroll, a Medical Social Worker, shared their experiences on the Working Person Podcast.
Concerns have been raised about Kaiser’s contingency plans to provide necessary care during the strike. A report from Los Angeles’ NPR affiliate is expected soon, featuring insights from the strike's lead researcher.
This week marks a critical period as attention diverts to the November 5 election. However, once the election concludes, the focus is anticipated to return to the strike, intensifying the pressure on Kaiser to reach a fair agreement.
Support and Resources for Striking Workers
The strike fund is actively seeking contributions. Workers are encouraged to share the Hardship Donation link with their networks. The deadline to apply for the first round of hardship funds is approaching, with applications available through the Hardship Fund FAQs and Disbursement Rules and the Hardship Fund Request Form. More information is available on the Psych-Social webpage, which also lists Financial Support Resources and Temporary and Outside Agency Work.
There are upcoming changes to picket line locations starting November 11. Workers should review these updates when signing up for picket shifts.
The strike has been documented with photos from various locations, including some festive Halloween images. These can be viewed in a gallery below, with more available on NUHW's social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok.
