Ohio Retirees Protest Trump’s Project 2025 at Shred Day Event

Ohio Retirees Rally Against Trump's Project 2025 with Symbolic Shredding Event

In a vivid demonstration against potential threats to public services, retired public service workers in Youngstown, Ohio, gathered over the Labor Day weekend to protest Donald Trump’s Project 2025. The event featured a shredding truck, symbolizing the dismantling of essential freedoms and protections for working individuals.

The retirees, representing various public service sectors from Ohio’s Mahoning Valley, voiced concerns over the proposed plan’s potential impact. They highlighted threats to union rights, overtime pay, and affordable healthcare, including the repeal of the $35 insulin cap for seniors and the end of negotiations for lower drug prices.

Helen Youngblood, affiliated with AFSCME Retirees Chapter 1184, emphasized the broader implications of Project 2025. “If Project 2025 is implemented, we all lose. Our communities lose peace of mind that the services they depend on will be there when they need them,” she stated. “Working families lose peace of mind that the good jobs and benefits they work hard at will be there the next day. We all lose the freedom to get ahead in America.”

Don Hall, a retired member of the Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OAPSE)/AFSCME Local 4, criticized Trump's initiative for its potential to undermine public service unions. Reflecting on his career in education, Hall remarked, “Our union gave us the peace of mind to know that we weren’t going to be randomly fired. It gave us the peace of mind that we would have the freedom to retire after a lifetime of hard work. But Donald Trump’s Project 2025 would destroy public services like education and destroy the unions of public service workers.”

Despite recent statements suggesting otherwise, Trump has shown consistent support for Project 2025. The comprehensive plan, spanning over 900 pages, was crafted by key advisors and aims to solidify strategies for a potential second term. Trump mentioned that the project aims to “lay the groundwork and detail plans for exactly what our movement will do.” Additionally, Russell Vought, one of the plan's primary authors, confirmed that Trump “blessed” Project 2025.

The shredding truck at the event symbolized the potential erosion of core freedoms, such as union membership rights, access to affordable healthcare, and secure retirement, that could be jeopardized under a second Trump administration.
