Robert Mele, President of Teamsters Joint Council 58, has issued a statement following Cruise's declaration of resuming operations in Houston, the U.S.'s fourth-largest city:

"Thousands of Texans who are part of the Teamsters family drive for a living. These workers and the general public alike have valid concerns about the safety of Cruise vehicles or any other robotaxi.

"Cruise's safety incidents include their vehicles injuring pedestrians, colliding with fire trucks, blocking waste trucks, and nearly hitting children. These are the same vehicles that supposedly struggle to recognize children on camera.

"Cruise is yet to regain the public trust lost after these mishaps. The company should not operate anywhere, with or without a human operator, especially while still under federal investigation.

"This isn't a partisan issue, but a safety one. Policymakers and stakeholders should demand accountability from robotaxi companies like Cruise before they are allowed to operate on our roads."

Teamsters Joint Council 58 represents over 15,000 workers in Texas.
