Labor Movement Presses Democratic Party to Prioritize Workers' Needs
AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler released the following statement:
The AFL-CIO emphasizes the importance of the Democratic Party aligning itself with the interests and goals of the working class. Recently, the labor movement has been proactive in engaging with those aiming to lead the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to prioritize workers' concerns. During the DNC Labor Council forum, candidates for the DNC chair faced direct inquiries from workers about strategies to refocus the party's attention on working-class issues and values to broaden its appeal to all laborers.
Throughout the engagement process, the labor movement has made it a point to ensure that workers' voices remain central to the discussions. Consequently, the issues facing working people have been kept prominent in the DNC leadership selection process, marking a significant achievement irrespective of the final choice for chair. Although the AFL-CIO appreciates the candidates' participation in this critical conversation and their thoughtful responses to pressing issues, the federation has opted not to endorse any candidate in the race for the chair position. This decision arises from the recognition of diverse perspectives that complicate reaching a consensus. Currently, individual unions and union leaders are assessing the candidates, and some may decide to provide endorsements despite the AFL-CIO's neutral stance.
In December, a statement of principles was issued to highlight the priorities of workers for the party's future direction. As the selection process advances, the labor movement will continue to unify efforts to bring working people's concerns to the forefront. The focus is not on individuals but on a shared vision. Leadership that genuinely listens to workers, rather than yielding to consultants and corporate donors with conflicting interests, is essential for the Democratic Party's capacity to engage and mobilize the workforce nationwide.
While the AFL-CIO refrains from endorsing a specific candidate for the chair, the organization remains committed to collaborating closely with DNC leaders to uplift working people across different regions and ideologies. This collaborative effort aims to counteract anti-union initiatives from wealthy opponents and promote a labor agenda that enhances the movement, mobilizes workplaces and electoral participation, and empowers workers and their families.
