Teamsters Local 734 Announces Major Agreement with Bimbo Bakeries
The workers of Bimbo Bakeries in Chicago have successfully negotiated a new contract just in time to avert a potential strike. Represented by Teamsters Local 734, the 275 warehouse and route sales employees secured significant improvements in their employment terms.
According to Jeff Padellaro, Director of the Teamsters Brewery, Bakery, and Soft Drink Conference, the workers were prepared to strike if necessary. “Our members were serious about their strike threat and were ready to head to the picket line if management refused to put a fair agreement on the table,” Padellaro emphasized, illustrating the unity and determination that drove negotiations.
The freshly ratified contract includes vital enhancements such as reinforced health care protections, job security assurances, and pension plan improvements. Wage increases were also secured for both hourly and commissioned workers, marking a pivotal victory for the team.
Scott C. Kunz, President of Local 734, commended the members for their resolve. “No one can mess with Bakery Teamsters,” Kunz stated. “These rank-and-file members were committed to coming away with a deal that honored their hard work and nothing less.” The successful negotiation was attributed to their solidarity and the strategic guidance of Director Padellaro.
Corey Sims, a shop steward and member of Local 734, reflected on the outcome, stating, “Throughout negotiations we knew that staying united was the most important thing. We’re excited that our efforts paid off. Not only were we able to avert a strike, but we won major improvements that will improve our lives and our families’ lives.”
