Last week in Nashville, Teamsters from across the country convened to discuss bargaining strategies with Dairy Farmers of America (DFA). The Teamsters unanimously voted for coordinated bargaining with the dairy cooperative.

“It’d be hypocritical for DFA to refuse coordinated bargaining with us,” said Jesse Case, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 238. “They’re a cooperative designed to enhance economic leverage. Shouldn’t DFA Teamsters do the same?”

DFA, owned by U.S. dairy farm owners, produces one third of domestic raw milk, making it the largest U.S. dairy producer. The Teamsters have 18 collective bargaining agreements expiring between March and April next year. This opportunity arises from DFA’s acquisition of parts of Dean Foods, leading to synchronized contract expiration dates.

“This isn’t a small family farm. DFA is the industry’s biggest player and highly profitable,” said Lou Villalvazo, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 630. “DFA has ample funds to pay our members fairly.”

“We’re aiming for the highest industry standards,” said Kevin Saylor, Teamsters Local 120 Business Agent. “We want to enhance union power within DFA and other dairy providers.”

During the meeting, DFA representatives reviewed the history of bargaining, minimum contract standards, and strategies for securing the best compensation packages. Presentations were also given by the Teamsters Strategic Initiatives Department.

“We’re militant, organized, and united,” said Brian Ball, Local 61 Secretary-Treasurer. “We’ve never been in a better position to negotiate top contracts at DFA.”
