LA Bus Workers Approve New Contract, Strike Averted

MV Transportation workers in Los Angeles, members of Teamsters Local 572, have decisively approved a new three-year contract, staving off a potential strike. The contract involves significant wage hikes and benefit enhancements.

Lourdes Garcia, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 572, praised the agreement, stating it underscores the essential role of transit workers in Los Angeles. She extended gratitude to Mayor Karen Bass, the LA City Council, and city management for their help in achieving the agreement.

Katanya Currie, a bus driver at MV Transportation, voiced her pride in the unity displayed throughout the negotiations. She indicated that the new contract will allow them to maintain quality service to the community and attract new staff.

The bargaining committee had been negotiating for several months with MV Transportation, and Local 572 members had received authorization to strike in March.

Traci Smith, a representative of Local 572, remarked on the unwavering resolve of their members during negotiations, saying it fortified their unity and motivated them further.

The bargaining unit, comprising 360 bus drivers, mechanics, and utility workers, transports numerous passengers in Downtown LA and nearby areas including Echo Park, Crenshaw, Fairfax, and popular destinations like Grand Central Station.
