Road Building Sector Expansion

Despite development of prototype flying cars, the global need for roads shows no signs of decreasing. 2024 is set to witness continued growth in road building, with a projected value of up to US$3 trillion globally. This is fueled by green initiatives, infrastructure investment, and emerging technology, all driving the reconstruction of motorways and connection of communities.

The US, boasting the largest road network with approximately 6.5-million-km (4-million-miles) of motorways, is one country set to increase its road system in 2024, largely due to federal investment in infrastructure projects. Billions have already been earmarked for road projects, including new paths and road demolition or freeway removal.

However, not all US road builds rely on government funding. For example, the North Tarrant Express (NTE) Capacity Improvement project in Texas will be funded by future toll revenues. This $414 million scheme will enhance a 13-mile (21km) passage between Fort Worth and Irving, with no public money being used for its construction.

Ambitious Road Building Targets in India

In India, 2024 is set to be a breakthrough year for construction activities, especially in road segments. The country’s Ministry of Road Transport revealed plans to construct 13,814km (8,584 miles) of national highways through the fiscal year 2023-24. This would mark the highest ever achievement. Technological advancements in construction have been key drivers of this productivity boost.

India is also the host of the Bharatmala Pariyojana project, one of the most expensive and expansive, aiming to build or improve 83,677km (51,994 miles) of roads at a cost of over $130 billion. The main goal is to connect smaller cities and remote areas with the country’s megacities.

Advanced Machines Driving Road Construction

Advanced machine technology has revolutionized the road building industry. Swiss-based firm Ammann emphasizes the importance of replacing older machine types with newer models boasting improved productivity, ergonomics, and sustainability. The company also stresses the importance of data in making informed decisions on the jobsite and at the office.

Smaller machines have also become more prevalent on sites, easing the burden on larger equipment. Ammann’s ARW 65-S walk-behind compactor/roller is an example of how comfort and functionality are shaping road-building machinery development.

Focus on Sustainability

Sustainability is becoming a key focus in the road building industry. Technologies are being developed to help reduce carbon emissions and the overall footprint of road construction.
