Alaska Union Leaders Condemn DOJ's Threat to Block Senate Race Results
Alaska Public Employees and Nurses Associations Respond to Justice Department's Move
JUNEAU, Alaska—The Alaska Public Employees Association (APEA) and Alaska Nurses Association (AaNA), in conjunction with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), voiced their stance following the Trump Justice Department’s announcement to potentially litigate against the certification of Alaska’s U.S. Senate race should the Republican contender face defeat. Both APEA and AaNA are linked nationally to the AFT, which encompasses 1.875 million members.
“This desperate and shameful political attack is yet another attempt to steal the election and overturn the will of the American people. The federal government has no role in administering elections—and this issue was resolved by the Alaska Supreme Court months ago. Now, on the eve of an election, when the Trump administration realizes its preferred candidate may lose, it tries to muzzle Alaskan voters’ voices,” stated Sandy Thompson Wallace, Shannon Davenport, and Randi Weingarten, representing their respective organizations.
The announcement comes as a reaction to the potential outcome of the Senate race, which could see the Trump administration's favored candidate losing. In response, leaders from APEA and AaNA, alongside AFT, emphasized the importance of voter choice, declaring, “In America, voters choose their leaders, but that hasn’t stopped the president and his political henchmen from trying to choose their own voters. Alaskans will not be intimidated by this behavior and will respond at the ballot box during early voting and on Election Day.”
The AFT's Broader Representation
The AFT represents a diverse body of 1.875 million individuals ranging from pre-K through 12th-grade educators, paraprofessionals, and various school-affiliated personnel, to higher education faculty, professional staff, government employees at all levels, nurses, healthcare workers, and early childhood educators.
