WASHINGTON —

The Keep The Promise at Stellantis initiative is bringing its efforts to the nation's capital. On Thursday, a coalition comprising UAW members, lawmakers, and supporters will convene to insist that Stellantis fulfills its pledged investment in maintaining quality American jobs.

During the previous year's Stand Up Strike, UAW members at Stellantis secured $19 billion in commitments from the corporation, which included reopening a shuttered assembly plant located in Belvidere, Illinois. Currently, Stellantis appears to be reconsidering this and other investment obligations outlined in their contract.

UAW President Shawn Fain stated, "Stellantis made a promise to invest in America and we’re making sure they keep the promise. The commitments we won in our contract aren’t goals, they’re guarantees. The company claims they don’t have the money to make these investments. But since the year began, they’ve dumped more than $3 billion into stock buybacks. They have the money to Keep The Promise."

The 2023 contract arrangement includes provisions that allow the UAW to file grievances and initiate strikes if Stellantis fails to adhere to its product and investment commitments.

In August, UAW locals representing a substantial workforce at Stellantis began lodging grievances against the company's failure to reopen the Belvidere plant and produce the next generation Dodge Durango in Detroit. Should the grievance process be exhausted without resolution, a strike may be authorized by the union.

To date, two UAW locals at Stellantis have already voted in favor of strike authorization, with additional locals slated to hold similar votes shortly. Consequently, a strike at one or more Stellantis sites could be imminent.

The Keep the Promise Rally will commence at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, situated near the Washington Hilton.
