Jacksonville School Bus Workers Stand Firm for Fair Contract
A significant move unfolded in Jacksonville, Florida, as 275 school bus workers represented by Teamsters Local 512 at Durham School Services GSA-3 took a decisive vote. The group overwhelmingly agreed to authorize a strike if the company does not secure a satisfactory collective bargaining agreement.
"Our members have spoken with one voice," remarked Rebecca Cardona, President of Local 512. "This vote sends a clear message that our members will not stand by while the company attempts to strip away the wages, benefits, and workplace protections that generations of workers fought to achieve. Our members deserve respect, and they deserve a contract that recognizes the vital work they perform each and every day."
Negotiations have been ongoing for weeks, with the company proposing substantial concessions that could weaken the rights and protections long established through collective bargaining. These proposals have raised concerns among the workers, who feel that the company's approach undermines a well-developed contract and the essential rights of those who ensure the safe transportation of Jacksonville’s students.
Katina Stewart, a bus driver with 19 years of experience and a member of Local 512, expressed her disappointment, saying, "This company has had every chance to do the right thing and recognize our hard work. We love our jobs and take pride in safely getting Jacksonville’s students where they need to go every day. We do work this community depends on, and our contract should reflect that."
Due to the company's lack of commitment to reaching an equitable agreement, Local 512 is gearing up to explore legal options, including the possibility of filing unfair labor practice charges under the National Labor Relations Act.
