Stop & Shop Protest

(BOSTON) – Teamsters leaders have expressed strong opposition to Stop & Shop's recent actions threatening job security and health care benefits for its workers. Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division, and Thomas G. Mari, President of Teamsters Local 25, issued a joint statement condemning the grocery giant's moves to potentially shutter the Freetown, Massachusetts, distribution center and subcontract work unless employees relinquish their union health care plan.

The statement criticizes Ahold Delhaize, the Dutch-Belgian parent company of Stop & Shop, for their approach despite the company achieving nearly $94 billion in sales the previous year. "The Teamsters unequivocally condemn Stop & Shop‘s threats to subcontract work and close the Freetown, Mass., distribution center unless hardworking Teamsters give up their union health care plan," the statement reads.

Erickson and Mari further warned that continued threats to the jobs of over 900 Teamsters would lead to extended picket lines at every Stop & Shop outlet in New England. "The Teamsters will never let a foreign-owned corporation bully American workers into accepting substandard health care. Our members will not be intimidated. We will not back down," they emphasized.

With a rich history dating back to 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters stands as a major union representing 1.3 million workers across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico.
