OpenAI and NABTU Join Forces to Elevate Workforce Training in AI Infrastructure
Washington, D.C. – March 11, 2026 – In a significant move to bolster the workforce behind the burgeoning AI infrastructure, OpenAI has teamed up with North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) to enhance training pathways within the construction industry. This partnership aims to ensure that the development of AI-related facilities supports union jobs and enriches communities economically.
The increasing demand for AI technology has necessitated the construction of robust infrastructure, such as computing centers and energy generation facilities. Members of NABTU's affiliates are positioned to play a pivotal role in this expansion, ensuring that the construction surge fuels both economic growth and employment opportunities.
This collaboration between OpenAI and NABTU seeks to foster dialogue on policy formation, project approvals, workforce progression, labor standards, and safety in AI infrastructure projects. "This partnership commits to shared values and is a recognition that none of this work happens without America’s best-in-class, highly skilled construction workforce," remarked Sean McGarvey, President of NABTU. He emphasized the unmatched skill, productivity, and safety of the workforce needed for the precision and scale required by AI projects.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, highlighted the critical role of union workers in laying the groundwork for the AI economy. He stated, “Ensuring the benefits of AI reach everyone starts with the workers who will build the infrastructure that powers it.” He further praised NABTU's ability to recruit and train skilled workers at scale, vital for the success of these infrastructure projects.
NABTU represents over 3 million trained workers across the U.S. and Canada and supports extensive apprenticeship programs nationwide. In 2023, NABTU and industry allies launched TradesFutures, a non-profit dedicated to broadening access to union construction careers, particularly for underrepresented groups. Currently, their Apprenticeship Readiness Programs (ARPs) are the largest in any industry, with more than 270 programs in 34 states. OpenAI has pledged support to TradesFutures, enhancing training and recruitment efforts.
"We are grateful for OpenAI’s investment in our model," said Marina Zhavoronkova, Executive Director of TradesFutures, signifying OpenAI’s commitment to fostering sustainable careers in their operational communities.
