NextEra and Google Partner to Restart Duane Arnold Nuclear Plant in Iowa

The future of nuclear energy in the United States is taking a significant step forward with a new partnership aimed at addressing the surging electricity demands brought about by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). The collaboration between NextEra Energy and Google is set to play a crucial role in this transformation.

Reviving the Duane Arnold Energy Center

Central to this partnership is the planned reactivation of the Duane Arnold Energy Center, Iowa’s sole nuclear power facility situated in Palo, near Cedar Rapids. The plant's restart will provide Google with 615 megawatts of carbon-free power to support its cloud and AI operations within Iowa. This move is expected to enhance local grid stability, create numerous jobs, and inject economic vitality into the Midwest.

Partnership Details

Google has committed to a 25-year agreement to procure carbon-free power from Duane Arnold. Similarly, the Central Iowa Power Cooperative (CIPCO), a minority stakeholder, will acquire the plant’s remaining output under similar terms. NextEra Energy is set to fully own the facility by acquiring CIPCO and Corn Belt Power Cooperative's combined 30% stake. Subject to regulatory approvals, Duane Arnold is anticipated to become operational by early 2029.

Economic Impact

An economic study indicates that the plant's revival could significantly benefit Iowa’s economy. Statewide, construction and operation activities are projected to generate over 1,600 jobs and $340 million in annual economic output. In Linn County, the project may create over 800 jobs and contribute $320 million annually during operations.

Strategic Vision

As the nation embraces AI-related innovations, this collaboration positions Google to responsibly expand its operations. The alliance with NextEra Energy facilitates investments necessary for the plant’s restart without imposing costs on Iowa’s energy consumers. Looking forward, NextEra Energy and Google have also agreed to explore future nuclear generation projects within the United States to meet the nation’s growing electricity needs. Ruth Porat, president and chief investment officer of Alphabet and Google, remarked, “This partnership serves as a model for the investments needed across the country to build energy capacity and deliver reliable, clean power.”

Community and Government Support

The project has garnered support from various stakeholders. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds emphasized the state’s leadership in powering America’s AI future through clean energy. Echoing this sentiment, State Senator Charlie McClintock stated, “Bringing Duane Arnold back online is a big win for Linn County and the entire state of Iowa.”

In preparation for the restart, NextEra Energy is working closely with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and other authorities to ensure a safe and compliant reactivation. The recommissioning process involves thorough engineering evaluations and public engagement to align with federal, state, and local regulations.
