New Coalition Seeks to Balance Data Center Growth and Community Welfare
The American Infrastructure Alliance (AIA) has made a significant move to unite business and labor forces across the nation, aiming to create sensible standards for data center infrastructure. The coalition seeks to address critical issues such as energy cost management and water resource protection while ensuring that local communities benefit from these developments.
On September 28, 2026, AIA officially announced the formation of this first-of-its-kind coalition in Washington, consisting of prominent organizations like The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, The International Association of Iron Workers, SoftBank, and OpenAI, among others. These organizations emphasize the importance of establishing responsible growth strategies at both state and local levels.
The coalition's primary mission is to foster collaboration among industry leaders, labor groups, and policymakers. AIA aims to promote long-term investments that contribute to community and regional development without being swayed by impending elections. The group will focus on devising locally tailored standards, avoiding a universal approach, and will support existing discussions in crucial states to create frameworks that safeguard natural resources, boost job creation, and enhance economic stability.
Kenneth Cooper, IBEW International President, stated, "Our members are proud to lead the way in modernizing our energy infrastructure and strengthening our economic and energy security for decades to come." He warned against blanket bans that could harm the economy and job opportunities.
Michael Coleman, General President of SMART, stressed the significance of data center development as an opportunity for the U.S. to "lead by building, investing, and creating skilled, high-paying jobs here at home." He highlighted the coalition's role in ensuring that American workers have a voice in this vital infrastructure advancement.
Mark McManus, General President of the United Association, emphasized the crucial role of high-quality standards, saying, "We cannot settle for anything less than the highest standards of quality and safety," while highlighting the union's long-standing commitment to water resource protection.
According to Tag Greason, Co-CEO of QTS, "Responsible growth requires clear expectations for everyone involved." He assured communities of transparent commitments relating to resources and infrastructure.
AIA will also draw upon its own polling findings, which reveal shifting attitudes from skepticism to support for data center projects when clear, enforceable guidelines are presented. These outcomes guide AIA's policy development efforts, focusing on:
