Meta to Invest $600B in AI Data Centers, Workforce, and Community Support

In a bold move to bolster the future of artificial intelligence, Meta has outlined a significant investment strategy, pledging over $600 billion by 2028 into the development of AI-centric data centers and workforce expansion within the United States. This initiative is part of the company's broader mission to propel the next wave of AI technologies, positioning the US as a hub for economic development, technological advancement, and innovation.

Since 2010, Meta's data center infrastructure projects have resulted in substantial employment opportunities, with over 30,000 skilled trade jobs and 5,000 operational roles being supported. Through collaborations with American general contractors and manufacturers, the company has infused more than $20 billion into the subcontracting sector nationwide. These efforts enrich trades like steelwork, electrical work, pipefitting, and fiber installation, as Meta gears its facilities for the demanding tasks of large-scale AI model training and deployment.

Meta is committed to responsible development practices, partnering with utility providers to address the energy demands of its data centers. This partnership has facilitated hundreds of millions of dollars in grid upgrades and contributed 15 gigawatts of new energy to the US power infrastructure. Furthermore, Meta is working towards water efficiency, with initiatives to restore local watersheds, aiming for water positivity by 2030.

Community engagement remains a cornerstone of Meta's strategy. The company invests in local infrastructure, sources materials and labor locally where feasible, and supports educational initiatives in STEM and the arts. Meta has also significantly contributed to community welfare through utility assistance programs and $58 million in Data Center Community Action Grants. These funds empower schools, nonprofits, and community groups to enhance STEM programs, provide veteran workforce training, and support services like senior nutrition programs.
