Louisiana's Strategic Leap Towards Economic Growth

In a move set to redefine Louisiana's economic landscape, Governor Jeff Landry approved a transformative piece of legislation in June 2024. The "Positioning Louisiana to Win" bill, officially known as SB 494, aims to invigorate business investment and job creation throughout the state. This initiative reshapes the Louisiana Economic Development's framework to more effectively lure new enterprises and bolster existing ones.

The legislation mandates the formation of a private sector-driven board tasked with crafting an economic development strategic plan, alongside advising on policies and programs to stimulate economic growth.

Under the backing of SB 494, Louisiana reported 183 active projects by December 2024. These initiatives have paved the way for over 32,220 potential new jobs, the retention of 18,000 jobs, and more than $87.6 billion in projected capital expenditures. The year concluded with Louisiana boasting $16.1 billion in capital investment, creating upwards of 9,000 new jobs and retaining approximately 4,000 positions.

Lafayette: A Beacon of Business and Innovation

Its strategic location at the crossroads of Interstates 10 and 49 makes it an attractive site for industries in technology, manufacturing, and logistics, spurring significant growth and innovation.

The economic landscape of Lafayette Parish is diverse, spanning sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, information technology, and oilfield services. The University of Louisiana at Lafayette, a Carnegie R1 research institution, and South Louisiana Community College, an Aspen Top 150 community college, anchor the region's educational and economic vitality. Lafayette's economic tenacity is rooted in its entrepreneurial ethos, strategic industry growth, and a community known for its strong work ethic.

Several recent business moves highlight Lafayette's appeal to forward-thinking companies. A collaborative venture between the tech giant CGI, UL Lafayette, and SoLAcc underscores Lafayette’s dedication to workforce development. This partnership has led to new degree programs, curriculum innovations, and the launch of Louisiana's first Master of Science degree in Informatics. Such collaborations have resulted in over 700 jobs at CGI's U.S. Onshore Delivery Center in Lafayette, indicative of the region's thriving tech sector.

Lafayette Economic Development Authority (LEDA) has been pivotal, partnering with One Acadiana and tech leaders to establish the Lafayette Regional Technology Council. Highlighting Lafayette's development potential, SafeSource Direct utilized one of Lafayette's Certified Sites, characterized by rigorous environmental and zoning reviews, to expedite operations in under a year.

The region's strategic allure also beckoned Buc-ee’s, a Texas-based travel center chain, to plan a new location on Interstate 10, reinforcing Lafayette as a key point for southeastern expansion.
