Amazon Workers Build Power, Join Newly Chartered ALU-IBT Local 1

Amazon Labor Union (ALU) members in Staten Island, N.Y., have voted to affiliate with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), with a 98.3 percent approval rate. This affiliation grants Amazon workers enhanced representation and valuable resources as they push for a contract from the global trillion-dollar corporation.

The newly chartered ALU-IBT Local 1 will represent around 5,500 Amazon warehouse workers at JFK8 in Staten Island, extending its jurisdiction over all five boroughs of New York.

Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien expressed pride in Amazon workers’ unity against their employer. He stated that the Teamsters and ALU, standing together, will ensure Amazon workers gain the good jobs and safe working conditions they deserve.

ALU President Chris Smalls and Connor Spence of the ALU Democratic Reform Caucus also emphasized the strengthened worker power and the potential for improved conditions and a secured contract at JFK8.

Despite Amazon's efforts to disrupt the unionization process, JFK8 workers remained united. Local 1, the first ALU-IBT affiliate under the Teamsters Constitution, will provide its members with access to the financial and organizational resources of the Teamsters International Union.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, founded in 1903, represents 1.3 million hardworking people in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. Visit Teamster.org for more information and follow on Twitter @Teamsters and Facebook at Facebook.com/teamsters.
