Governor Shapiro Announces $448M for Broadband Expansion in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania to Receive Over $448 Million for Broadband Expansion

Pennsylvania is set to enhance its internet infrastructure with a substantial financial boost. The state will receive over $448 million from the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program. This funding aims to ensure that every Pennsylvanian can access affordable high-speed internet, addressing long-standing connectivity issues in both rural and urban areas.

The BEAD program's funding will initially support projects in 50 counties, focusing on expanding internet access to underserved communities. With a commitment to allocate all remaining program funds by year's end, the initiative promises a comprehensive approach to closing the digital divide across the state.

Governor Shapiro emphasized the importance of this funding, stating, "Access to affordable high-speed internet is essential for education, work, and healthcare. This investment is a significant step towards ensuring every Pennsylvanian can participate fully in the digital economy."

The Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority, which manages the distribution of the funds, will oversee the implementation of these projects. Their goal is to ensure that the infrastructure developments are both sustainable and beneficial for the long-term growth of Pennsylvania's digital landscape.
