Erie County Program Awarded $753K to Combat Food Insecurity

Major Boost for Food Security in Northwest Pennsylvania

In a significant move to combat food insecurity, the Shapiro Administration has earmarked $753,000 to bolster the efforts of the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania. This investment is part of a broader initiative under the Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP), which incentivizes businesses to support nonprofits in revitalizing communities statewide.

The program, which recently received a funding increase to $72 million, aims to enrich Pennsylvania's regions through its various components. The first wave of awards was announced in September 2024, followed by a second round in January 2025. This expansion underscores the administration's commitment to addressing food insecurity and promoting economic growth.

“The Shapiro Administration knows that when local communities are healthy and vibrant, Pennsylvania thrives,” stated Deputy Secretary Rick Vilello. The increased funding for NAP is designed to have a widespread impact, particularly for organizations like the Second Harvest Food Bank, which faces the challenge of serving one in seven residents who experience food insecurity.

With the grant, Second Harvest plans to distribute 12.5 million pounds of food across its service area, leveraging a network of pantries, mobile distributions, and partner organizations. Greg Hall, CEO of Second Harvest, emphasized the significance of partnerships formed through NAP, saying, “NAP has enabled Second Harvest and our partner organizations to directly provide nutritious meals to our neighbors who are experiencing food insecurity.”

The program's impact has been praised by local leaders. Senator Dan Laughlin noted the program's role in addressing blight and supporting housing, while Representative Ryan Bizzarro highlighted its importance amidst federal cutbacks on assistance for farmers and low-income individuals.

The Neighborhood Assistance Program comprises five main components, including the Enterprise Zone Program. The program's success and its impact on community development can be further explored in the NAP impact brochure.
