(CHICAGO) – A significant legislative victory has been achieved with the Illinois legislature's passage of SB2111 HA3, designed to ensure the sustainable operation of the state's public transportation systems. This legislation aims to prevent looming cuts in services and avert potential layoffs, bolstering economic progress and environmental benefits statewide.

Endorsed by key figures such as Mark Wallace, President of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, Tony Cardwell, President of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes, and Thomas W. Stiede, President of Teamsters Joint Council 25, the bill is seen as a comprehensive remedy that guarantees long-term funding solutions for public transit.

“Public transportation drives economic growth, increased environmental sustainability, and improvements to quality of life. This is a benefit to everyone throughout Illinois regardless of how often they utilize buses and trains,” stated Wallace and his colleagues in a joint message, highlighting the bill's potential to serve as a blueprint for other states grappling with similar funding issues.

As the bill awaits the signature of Gov. JB Pritzker—who has expressed his intent to sign it into law—the coalition of elected officials, transit riders, and union members are credited for their dedicated efforts in crafting this legislative achievement.
