Duracell to Establish New Global R&D Headquarters in Atlanta
ATLANTA – February 19, 2025 – In a notable development for Georgia's business landscape, Duracell has announced plans to set up its new Global Headquarters for Research and Development in Atlanta's Science Square. This strategic move is expected to generate 110 jobs and represents an investment of approximately $56 million.
Governor Brian P. Kemp expressed enthusiasm over the announcement, highlighting Georgia's reputation for attracting innovative companies due to its strong research institutions and business-friendly environment. "I want to thank our local and state partners who are leveraging those assets to their fullest to bring new opportunities across the state," Kemp stated. "We are excited to welcome Duracell’s R&D headquarters to Atlanta and continue building on this great relationship."
Duracell, renowned for its production of alkaline, lithium coin, and hearing aid batteries, already has a significant presence in Georgia with facilities in LaGrange and Fairburn. The LaGrange facility has been operational since 1980, while the Fairburn plant began operations in 2020, together supporting approximately 675 jobs.
Dr. Liben Hailu, Duracell's Chief Technology Officer, remarked on the potential the move holds, emphasizing the company’s commitment to innovation in battery technology. "This move is a significant milestone for Duracell as we continue to drive innovation in battery technology for many years to come," he said.
The new headquarters will be situated at 101 Nerem Street NW, adjacent to Georgia Tech’s Midtown Atlanta campus. Science Square is a sprawling 18-acre development dedicated to fostering innovation, featuring over 1.8 million square feet of lab and office space.
Mayor Andre Dickens highlighted Atlanta’s robust infrastructure and talented workforce as pivotal factors in Duracell’s decision. “Atlanta’s transportation infrastructure, diverse talent pool from top-tier universities, and a thriving tech ecosystem make the city an ideal environment for corporate innovation and growth,” Dickens noted.
Katie Kirkpatrick, President & CEO of the Metro Atlanta Chamber, echoed the positive sentiments, stating, "The impact of Duracell's decision to locate their R&D headquarters in Atlanta goes beyond the 110 new innovation jobs in the region: as they make Science Square their new home, Duracell strengthens our region’s powerful reputation as a hub for innovation and furthers Georgia's growing battery ecosystem."
Fulton County Board of Commissioners Chairman Robb Pitts also commended the development, citing the unique job opportunities and investment as a win for both the county and the state. "Duracell’s choice to set up its Global R&D Headquarters in Fulton County solidifies Fulton’s leadership in innovation and talent attraction," he said.
The Georgia Department of Economic Development’s Global Commerce team played a crucial role in securing this project, collaborating with Invest Atlanta, Select Fulton, Metro Atlanta Chamber, Georgia Power, and the University System of Georgia.
GDEcD Commissioner Pat Wilson emphasized the strategic partnership between Duracell and Georgia, stating, “For decades, Georgia has been home to Duracell, and it’s exciting that they are looking to invest their future back into our state.
