Calgon Carbon Expands Pittsburgh Facilities, Adding New Jobs and Growth

Pennsylvania Secures Major Investment for Economic Growth

Calgon Carbon Corporation, the world's leading producer of activated carbon products, is set to expand its Pittsburgh facilities with a fresh $13.2 million investment, supported by an additional $300,000 grant from the Commonwealth. This initiative aims to generate 23 new high-paying jobs and secure 405 existing ones.

Pennsylvania, emerging as the sole state in the Northeast with an expanding economy, has outpaced multiple states to clinch this expansion, reinforcing its position as a growing economic hub under Governor Shapiro’s leadership. The Governor has successfully attracted over $32.5 billion in private sector investments, resulting in more than 18,000 new jobs statewide.

Harrisburg, PA – Governor Josh Shapiro announced the expansion of Calgon Carbon Corporation's facilities in Pittsburgh, which involves constructing an 11,000-square-foot addition to its recycling plant and a 35,000-square-foot expansion for equipment fabrication. This initiative was driven by competition with states like Kentucky, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, and Texas.

Governor Shapiro emphasized Pennsylvania's competitive edge, stating, “Under my Administration, Pennsylvania is competing aggressively — and winning — against other states on both the national and global stage.” The strategic investments focus on bolstering Pennsylvania’s business environment and leveraging its skilled workforce and strategic location.

The Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) has backed this project with a $300,000 Pennsylvania First grant. DCED Secretary Rick Siger commented, “We’re proud to support a long-standing Pennsylvania business like Calgon Carbon Corporation... This expansion will allow Calgon Carbon to increase its production and recycling capabilities in Pittsburgh, while also creating more high-paying manufacturing jobs in the region.”

Calgon Carbon's Neville Township facility plays a crucial role in manufacturing materials for military gas masks, aiding the U.S. Department of Defense and Allied Nations. The expansion is expected to boost domestic manufacturing capacity and supply reliability.

Calgon Carbon Corporation President and CEO, Steve Schott, noted, “Pennsylvania has been Calgon Carbon’s home for decades, and this investment reinforces our long-term commitment to growing in the Pittsburgh region.”

Governor Shapiro's BusinessPA team coordinated this project, showcasing Pennsylvania's commitment to fostering business success through tailored guidance and strategic partnerships. The Commonwealth's efforts have attracted investments from various companies, including DrinkPAK, Farm Plast, and Eos, among others.
