$100K Grant Fuels Manufacturing Career Training for York's Youth

Investment in Workforce Development
York, PA – Today, Gwen Ross, Director of Workforce Development Initiatives at the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), announced a $100,000 investment through the Manufacturing PA Training-to-Career (MTTC) grant. This initiative is aimed at preparing youth in South Central Pennsylvania for lucrative manufacturing careers via a program at Crispus Attucks York.
Targeting individuals aged 18 to 24 from low-income backgrounds, the program partners with the Manufacturers’ Association and 12 local companies to offer a seven-week training, leading to apprenticeships and job placements. Each year, 20 participants will receive training focused on technical skills, safety, and problem-solving.

Director Ross highlighted, “Engaging young people who want to enter the workforce with advanced technology experiences helps place them on the path to rewarding manufacturing careers while also meeting the needs of the industry.”
Manufacturing Industry Growth
South Central Pennsylvania's manufacturing industry is projected to require over 11,000 new workers annually, with a potential need for 13,000 by 2029 due to advancements in manufacturing technologies.

Economic Development Strategy
The MTTC grant program collaborates with manufacturers to identify essential skills for new entrants and supports youth, particularly those facing employment barriers, in acquiring these skills. Since Governor Shapiro took office, the administration has focused on economic development, job creation, and innovation.
The proposed 2025-26 budget includes:
- $12.5 million for WEDnetPA to expand the workforce and address workforce gaps
- $2 million for Career Connect internships
- $50 million for the innovation ecosystem to boost life science jobs
- $10 million for AdvancePA tax credits
- $50 million investment in Housing Stock Restoration
- $10 million increase for the Act 47 Distressed Municipalities Program
