Webasto Detroit workers vote to unionize with UAW after long struggle
Webasto Detroit Workers Unionize with UAW
In a significant move, employees at Webasto Detroit have voted 276 to 133 to establish a union under the United Auto Workers (UAW) umbrella. The factory is known for manufacturing hard top roofs for the Ford Bronco.
The decision to unionize comes after a prolonged organizing effort lasting two and a half years. Workers cited issues such as favoritism, management bullying, excessive workloads, and problematic scheduling as key reasons for seeking representation.
“I’m thrilled we finally won our union. I’ve worked at Webasto for many years. We’re overworked and underpaid. We’re the ones who make money for the company. For too long, we’ve gotten nothing but disrespect from management. I’m ready for some mutual respect,” expressed Shara Bell, a Quality Technician for Webasto Detroit.
This achievement is part of a broader trend where auto supply workers are seeking unionization for better working conditions and benefits. Despite their crucial role in the automotive sector, many supply chain employees find themselves earning substantially less than assembly plant workers and handling hazardous substances without adequate safety measures.
UAW Region 1A Director, Mark DePaoli, stated, “Tonight, I am proud to welcome Webasto Detroit workers to the UAW family. These workers fought for years to form their union and faced another tough fight from the boss in this election. But they believed in one another and never gave up.” DePaoli added, “Webasto Detroit workers have won a collective voice on the job, and now they’ll begin working to win the fair pay, time off, and safer working conditions they deserve.”
The workforce at Webasto Detroit now joins their counterparts at Webasto Pilot Road, who successfully formed a union with UAW in 2023 and secured their initial contract in 2024.
