UAW VP Mike Booth's Statement on GM Special Attrition Program Expansion

The Facts -

  • In 2023 contract negotiations, an extra $50,000 was secured for eligible GM workers intending to retire under a program called the Special Attrition Program (SAP).
  • Unlike the agreements with Ford and Stellantis, every GM worker eligible to retire during the contract’s duration can receive the $50,000 SAP, subject to negotiations.
  • The eligibility for the SAP has been expanded to all 1,412 GM production workers who signed up, but further expansion is still being fought for the 545 skilled trades workers interested.

2023 Contract Negotiations Yield Additional $50,000 for Eligible GM Workers

Our 2023 contract negotiation results include an additional $50,000 for eligible GM workers planning to retire. This bonus represents an increase in retirement security for our members who've dedicated decades to GM. The bonus is part of the Special Attrition Program (SAP), showing our recognition for their service and the sacrifices made over the years.

There is a unique aspect to the GM deal compared to our agreements with Ford and Stellantis. Every GM employee eligible for retirement during the contract duration can receive the $50,000 SAP bonus if they wish, not only those eligible at ratification. However, the size, scope, and timing of each SAP phase were open to negotiation.

Expansion of the Special Attrition Program

We launched our first SAP phase earlier this year, making approximately 748 members eligible. Following feedback from our members, we revisited negotiations with the company to expand the eligibility.

We have successfully secured SAPs for all 1,412 GM production workers who signed up for the SAP. These workers are now eligible for the $50,000 retirement bonus, with retirement dates effective from June 1st, July 1st, or August 1st. This represents a significant expansion from GM's initial offer.

Continued Efforts for Skilled Trades Workers

Despite this success, our work is not over. We haven't yet secured immediate eligibility for all 545 skilled trades workers interested in SAP. Only around 142 are immediately eligible in this first window. We continue to advocate for expanding this number, addressing the shortage of skilled trade workers at GM. This issue calls for innovative solutions and an expansion of GM's apprenticeship programs. Rest assured, all eligible members will have the chance to receive the $50,000 SAP during this contract's lifetime, whether they belong to skilled trades or production.

The next SAP window is due to open in the 4th quarter of 2024. We're dedicated to building on our contract victories, intending to continue delivering for all UAW members at GM.

In solidarity,

UAW Vice President Mike Booth
