UAW Local 1112 Strikes Historic Agreement with Ultium Cells

A milestone agreement has been reached between UAW Local 1112 and Ultium Cells in Lordstown, Ohio, representing an important step in electric vehicle (EV) workers' rights. Workers at Ultium create batteries for GM EVs, and this new agreement symbolizes a halt to the corporate-driven race to the bottom within the EV transition.

This achievement is built on the success of the national contract that Ultium workers used to secure a significant victory in the Stand Up Strike.

“Ultium workers rejected low wages, unsafe conditions, and a bleak future for American battery workers,” said UAW President Shawn Fain. “They fought back, doubling their wages by the end of this contract, securing unprecedented health and safety provisions, and exemplifying a just transition's success.”

UAW Vice President Mike Booth added, “We were initially told that Ultium workers would never be part of the UAW’s national agreement at GM. However, we proved them wrong, and in fact, won a major local agreement that now sets the benchmark for the EV battery industry."

“The closing of Lordstown Assembly five years ago felt like a major blow,” said UAW Region 2B Director David Green. “They underestimated our resolve for fair wages and safe working conditions. Ultium workers are now leading the way.”

Josh Ayers, UAW Local 1112 Shop Chairman, underlined the persistent efforts of his coworkers at Ultium. “We aim for this agreement to become a template for current and future battery plants across the country,” he said.

The 1,600 UAW members at Ultium Cells will review the agreement details and conduct a ratification vote in the coming days. If approved, it will set a new standard for EV battery workers and signify a significant step in the transition to EVs.
