UAW Member Mobilization Institute Ignites Union Solidarity and Action
UAW Members Gather for Mobilization at Black Lake
ONAWAY, MI – UAW members from across the nation recently gathered at Black Lake for an event dedicated to strengthening union power. This assembly, held from September 28 to October 3, transcended the typical conference experience by serving as a catalyst for energizing worker mobilization.
Participants arrived with eagerness and dedication and left equipped with practical tools, strategies, and an invigorated commitment to activism. The event was not merely a discussion on mobilization; it was an embodiment of the concept.
From the opening to the concluding activities, the atmosphere was charged with energy. Drumbeats, music, artistic expressions, and theatrical performances added layers of creativity and joy, while storytelling provided depth to the shared experiences. Attendees engaged in comprehensive sessions covering internal organizing, legislative challenges, and planning impactful actions, complemented by hands-on practice to transform theoretical knowledge into practical skills and unwavering confidence. Training in social media and photography prepared them to initiate mobilization efforts immediately, while historical and contemporary examples of organizing and civil rights activism underscored the potential of collective power. Exchanges with fellow union members fostered new insights and growth.
The knowledge gained culminated in a dynamic Day of Action, where delegates orchestrated a rally that was, by turns, emotionally stirring, humorous, and invigorating, fostering a sense of unity and encouraging action for an economy that benefits the working class.
UAW President Shawn Fain expressed his excitement, urging all members:
“The impact of what we do or don’t do right now will be felt for future generations.
This is our moment! So, let’s get united. Let’s wear a red shirt every Wednesday because when a whole worksite full of people all show up united with a red shirt on, it tells the bosses we’re united.
Go to your Union meeting, take part in it, join a committee, support an organizing drive somewhere, support a contract campaign somewhere.
You know, every battle we’ve ever won throughout history was successful because we stood together. Being a member of the Union is not a spectator sport. Let’s get involved, let’s get united, and let’s get to work!!!“
President Shawn Fain
Fain's message resonated with the attendees, marking the start of a renewed push for union engagement. Delegates are now returning to their communities, bringing with them newfound passion, knowledge, and plans to bolster union power.
Actions initiated by each delegate at the local level will aim to mobilize every UAW member to RISE UP and to WEAR RED ON WEDNESDAYS, demonstrating solidarity on a global stage.
This event highlighted that solidarity is not merely symbolic; it is a substantial force capable of driving significant change.
The momentum continues as efforts to organize, mobilize, and achieve victories are set in motion.
