Teamsters Local 481 Grows with San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance Members

(SAN DIEGO) – In a recent development, the registrars at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (SDZWA) have opted to join the ranks of Teamsters Local 481. This marks the second group at SDZWA to align with this union within the year.

Teamsters Local 481 now represents around 1,800 employees at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, covering roles from wildlife care specialists to horticulturalists. This follows the veterinarian technicians who organized with the union in June.

Jeremy Hodges, a registrar at SDZWA and a newly inducted member of Local 481, emphasized, “We joined the Teamsters because we’ve seen firsthand the benefits that union representation brings to other employees at SDZWA.” He highlighted the critical nature of their work and the importance of having their compensation and benefits reflect their contributions.

The registrars' responsibilities include managing record-keeping for the zoo's wildlife collections, ensuring regulatory compliance, and tracking animal transactions. Their decision to organize came earlier this year after consultations with Teamsters stewards about their upcoming 2025 contract campaign, garnering significant interest from both union and nonunion employees.

Erin Borgardt, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 481, expressed enthusiasm about the expanding union membership, stating, “The momentum is building at SDZWA as more workers recognize the power of standing together. We look forward to welcoming more workers into our union and fighting for one strong contract.”
