In a bold move reflecting their demands for equitable pay and stable working hours, Teamsters at the Sunnyside dispensary in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, have unanimously voted to authorize a strike. This action follows the company's inability to propose a contract that acknowledges workers' contributions adequately. Sunnyside operates as part of Cresco Labs, a significant player in the multi-state cannabis sector.

Bill Shappell, President of Teamsters Local 429, stated, “Our members are united and ready to do whatever it takes to secure a strong contract. Sunnyside is part of a rapidly growing industry, and these workers are essential to the company’s success. They will not accept wages and working conditions that fall short of the standards they deserve.”

The demands revolve around obtaining fair wages and improved working hours. This potential strike underscores the escalating influence of Teamsters within the cannabis field. It occurs in the wake of a previous labor action in November, where Pennsylvania Teamsters succeeded in conducting the longest-running successful cannabis strike in U.S. history.

Jesse Case, Director of the Teamsters Food Processing Division, emphasized, “The Teamsters are building pathways for cannabis workers to support their families and enjoy a middle-class lifestyle. In countless other industries, people throughout this country can start young and build careers that last for decades. There is no reason cannabis workers should aspire to or expect anything less.”

Cobi Motley, a wellness advisor at Sunnyside and Local 429 member, added, “We’re looking to set the standard of quality for work in the cannabis industry by securing livable wages and promoting long term careers. We can’t accept a contract that creates economic instability in our future. It’s time for the company to come back to the table and offer a fair deal.”

Representing an array of workers in northeastern Pennsylvania, Teamsters Local 429 continues to advocate for better working conditions across industries. For further details, visit teamsters429.com.
