Supreme Court Ruling on Trump v. CASA Raises Concerns Over Citizenship Rights

WASHINGTON—In a significant legal development, the U.S. Supreme Court has sided with Donald Trump in his challenge against nationwide injunctions issued by lower courts, which had blocked his attempts to end the constitutional right to birthright citizenship through an executive order. This decision pertains to the case known as Trump v. CASA.

Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), expressed concerns regarding the implications of the court's ruling. She emphasized, “The Supreme Court’s decision in Trump v. CASA has broad implications, even if it kicks his illegal efforts to end the constitutional right to birthright citizenship down the road.”

Weingarten further criticized the decision, stating, “Today, the justices have kneecapped the lower courts’ ability to protect Americans from Trump’s most pernicious policy abuses, making it far more difficult to resolve key questions by requiring additional litigation. People need courts to protect them from this or any other administration wreaking havoc on our nation’s laws and Americans’ lives. Today’s decision is an abdication of the court’s duty to protect Americans and our democracy from an out-of-control executive branch.”

The AFT, representing 1.8 million members including pre-K through 12th-grade teachers, paraprofessionals, school-related personnel, higher education faculty, federal and state employees, nurses, healthcare workers, and early childhood educators, stands as a significant voice in this matter.
