Successful Bakersfield Strike Leads to Upcoming Hunger Strike Initiative

Demonstrations Continue in Bakersfield as Kaiser Workers Protest

This past Thursday, Bakersfield witnessed a significant protest involving over 30 individuals who gathered to voice their concerns about the treatment of behavioral health care services. Participants included demonstrators from areas such as the Inland Empire, Orange County, and Los Angeles. The protest was staged outside Kaiser Permanente's medical offices, prompting the building manager to call law enforcement. The event featured a "die-in" demonstration along with a rally, after which the group marched approximately half a mile to picket outside Kaiser's administrative offices.

The protest garnered attention from local media, with coverage by NBC and ABC's Bakersfield affiliates, as well as various YouTubers documenting the event.

Upcoming Hunger Strike Announced

In a continued effort to highlight their cause, nearly a dozen Kaiser workers have announced plans to initiate a five-day hunger strike. This action is slated to begin on Monday, April 7, outside the Kaiser Los Angeles Medical Center. The participants are motivated by a shared goal: to push Kaiser to improve the status of behavioral health care services. Prior to the strike, participants are advised to undergo physical assessments, including blood tests. Medical supervision is also being arranged, with support from NUHW and UNAC-represented registered nurses.
