New Initiative Offers Free Legal Support for Federal Workers
Federal employees facing unjust dismissal and mistreatment have a new ally in the form of a robust legal defense network. In response to the increasing number of federal workers affected by the policies of the previous administration, Rise Up: Federal Workers Legal Defense Network has been established to connect these employees with no-cost legal aid.
Washington, D.C.—The Rise Up: Federal Workers Legal Defense Network has officially launched, providing a lifeline to federal employees whose rights have been compromised. This initiative will offer pro bono legal assistance, ensuring that those affected by the Trump administration's employment policies receive proper representation.
In recent months, numerous federal workers have been unexpectedly terminated, leaving many families and communities in a precarious situation. As "reduction in force" plans are implemented, the demand for legal counsel is expected to rise. While unions and allied groups are actively litigating in defense of these workers, there remains a compelling need for individual legal support. The Rise Up Network aims to mobilize a vast number of lawyers ready to deliver this essential service free of charge.
Liz Shuler, president of the AFL-CIO, emphasized the broader implications of these dismissals, stating, "Attacks on federal workers are attacks on all workers and on the essential services that our communities rely on daily." She further expressed pride in the establishment of the network alongside partners, highlighting its role as a vital resource for empowering federal workers.
The network is spearheaded by organizations such as the AFL-CIO and We The Action, in collaboration with others including Democracy Forward, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), and the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU). This coalition is united in its mission to safeguard the rights of federal workers.
Anna Chu, executive director of We The Action, emphasized the potential for legal professionals to make a difference, explaining, "We The Action was founded on the fundamental premise that lawyers have the power to do good." She noted the unique position of lawyers to protect the federal workforce and expressed gratitude for the commitment of volunteer attorneys.
Skye Perryman, president and CEO of Democracy Forward, reiterated the importance of defending civil servants, describing them as "the backbone of our democracy." The Rise Up Network builds upon existing efforts to ensure these workers have access to the legal backing necessary to continue serving the public and upholding constitutional values.
Everett Kelley, national president of AFGE, highlighted the invaluable contribution of American civil servants, while Randy Erwin, national president of NFFE-IAM, emphasized the critical need for legal resources in the face of administrative challenges.
Doreen Greenwald, NTEU National President, welcomed the initiative, praising the volunteer attorneys who advocate for the careers and rights of federal employees. She reaffirmed the significance of civil servants in delivering vital services to the nation.
The American Constitution Society's interim president, Zinelle October, and The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights president and CEO, Maya Wiley, both underscored the essential role of legal support and advocacy for workers' rights. Wiley stated, "Labor rights are civil rights and workers deserve dignity and fairness, including federal workers who serve us all."
